                                      October 1, 2013

The meeting was held at the Golden Corral with 20 members and five guests.  The guests were Mickey McDaniel, Drew Long, Tommy Curry, Kathleen Curry, and Anna Curry.  Phil reminded everyone to sign up for shifts for Lions Candy Day.  Bill Maxey is in charge this year and needs more volunteers.  Dale Diamond had the October drawing for the Calendar Raffle and the big winner was Janis Von Qualen.  Lion of the Day was Phil Brooks who introduced our speaker Lion Dr. David Milner.  Dave talked to us about his experiences and travails while hiking the Appalachian Trail.  This endeavor took Dave over 6 months and 4 pair of shoes.  A very interesting question and answer session followed.  The 50/50 was won by Craig Drone.

 

                                     October 8, 2013                                     

The meeting was held at the Golden Corral with 21 members and one guest attending.  The guest was Larry Whirling a member of the Dekalb Evening Lions Club who has recently moved to Springfield.  Limey Nargelenas served as acting president in the absence of President Phil Brooks.  Ken Parker informed the club that his wife has had recent back surgery and we wish her a quick recovery.  Bill Maxey is still looking for volunteers for Candy Day.  Jerry Curry also needs volunteers to help deliver for the Mary Bryant chili lunch on October 18th.  John Albers stated that he has received 36 entries in the Peace Poster contest that you can vote on at the Hoogland Center until October 17th.  Tail Twister Dean Paisley fined Steve Frankenstein, Mitch Murdock, Jerry Curry & Phil Brooks.  Lion of the Day was Dale Diamond who introduced our speaker Angie Sowle who is the CEO of the Springfield YMCA.  She spoke about the downtown and Kerasotas YMCA.  The 50/50 was won by Joe Brockamp.
 

October 15, 2013

The meeting was held at the Golden Corral with 21 members and no guests.  Dr. Paul Anthony who is in charge of speakers for November advised the club that the speaker for November 19th will be Governor Jim Edgar. Due to the extra space needed the meeting will be held at American Harvest Restaurant located at Iles & Koke Mill. Please advise Dr. Paul Anthony if you plan on attending and haven’t signed the sign up sheet at the regular meetings. The meal will cost $13.00 and cash is the preferred method of payment.  Tail Twister Dean Paisley fined Phil Brooks and David Moreland via phone call.  Lion of the Day was Dale Diamond who introduced our speaker Janet Nelson. Janet is the supervisor of St. Claire’s Health Clinic.  Janet spoke to us about the services offered by the clinic.  Most of the free dental, vision and hearing test are for the underprivileged youth in the surrounding area.  The 50/50 was won by Craig Drone

 

 October 22, 2013                                     

The meeting was held at the Golden Corral with 29 members and three guests attending. The guests were Rhianna Gurley from the girl scouts, Matt O’Brien from the boy scouts and two Lion members who are looking to transfer to our club Larry Whirling & Barry Schillinger.  Bill Maxey informed the club that we made $2,106 during Candy Day.  Jamie Leslie announced the Christmas Party is being held 12-3-13 at Piper Glen and a sign up sheet is being passed around.  Our Lions club will have a booth at the 10-30-13 Senior Fair being held at the Sangamon County Health Department.  Steve Frankenstein was pleased to announce that the first Leo club has been formed in Athens.  This club is made up of high school students from Athens-Greenview.  John Albers exhibited the winners of the poster contest and Nicole Conway won first place.  Tail Twister Dean Paisley fined Barry Schillinger, Rhianna Gurley, Helen Hellner & John Hanlon.  Lion of the Day was Dale Diamond who introduced our speaker Lion John Hanlon.  John currently works for the Illinois Innocence
Project.  John talked about his experiences as an attorney.  Mike Fishel won the 50/50 drawing.
 

October 29, 2013

 The meeting was held at the Golden Corral with 23 members and one guest. The guest was transferring member Larry Whirling’s fiancée Rita Bohanan. Dr. Paul Anthony who is in charge of speakers for November advised the club that the speaker for November 19th will be Governor Jim Edgar. Tail Twister Dean Paisley fined Bob Maxey & Steve Frankenstein for being Grand Marshalls but paid the fine himself. Dean also fined himself for the informative discussion on the new lower GI treatment. Lion of the Day was Dale Diamond who introduced our speaker Pinky Noll. Pinky Noll spoke to us about the Lincoln Depot’s history. Pinky Noll is the new owner and has made major renovations to the building and kept part of it open as a historical site as well as the Noll Law Office. The 50/50 was won by Joe Brockamp.
